Our experience with the Key to Comfort lasted nearly 5 1/2 years and until we had the need for a repair, things seemed good. Dave is an exceptional employee, though I don't know if he still works there as we haven't seen him in years. He was always helpful and willing to go above and beyond. Early on he sold us on doing their Silver Club membership. This "membership" included annual furnace and A/C tune ups, a 20 discount and a reduced rate of 20 for service calls. Seemed like a deal to us and for the better part of 6 years we were blind to the reality of their pricing model. What we realized was that they charge on simplified billing model, assigning work to be done a level 1-6, 1 being lowest cost, 6 highest. Once we had a situation that required a repair the estimate came back and immediately struck me as being high, even though our 20 discount had been applied. My wife wondered if we could get an itemized look at the charges so we could understand the price we were being quoted. She called the shop and was greeted with defensiveness and accusations that her request was unreasonable and unheard of in their experience. Doesn't seem that crazy to me. What did cause me to pause was the office's defensiveness at such a simple request. If there is no reason to be defensive, why the hostility, why the accusatory, "I have never been asked for this before"? If there's nothing hide, there should be no need to be defensive. If my wife had been greeted with a different tone and been offered explanation of how they arrived at their price we likely would have been satisfied and never been the wiser. However, their defensiveness caused us to seek other quotes. In doing so, we found our 20 discount was being negated by rolling the price up. We received 3 additional quotes averaging 28 less then the amount associated with the level our service was assigned. All quotes were less expensive then our "discounted" rate. As loyal customers we felt betrayed by this pricing system, let down by their lack of transparencyand unwillingness to have the conversion in pricing, and disappointed by the office's lack of professionalism. If you're considering using The Key to Comfort, be aware of this going in. Perhaps this is an isolated incident and normally doesn't occur, I can't say for sure. What I do know is that anyone who treats customers that way doesn't deserve my business. For some it may not be an issue, for us it ended our relationship with them. As I stated starting out, we've had 5+ years of normal service and other than the fact we likely overpaid for these services during that time, things appeared to be fine. Now, we no longer have trust in their pricing integrity, therefore we're moving on. Best to you in your search for a provider.
